Your Clear Aligner Playbook

Aligners are only as good as the habits around them. A few small routines will keep your treatment on track — and keep your trays out of the trash can.

The 22-Hour Rule

Aligners only move teeth when they're on your teeth. Wearing them consistently is the single biggest predictor of how well (and how quickly) your treatment will go.

22 Hours a day, every day

Aim for 20 to 22 hours of daily wear. That leaves roughly two hours for meals, drinks other than water, brushing, and flossing — and not much else. Wear them less and your teeth stop tracking with the plan, which stretches your timeline and can mean a new set of refinement trays.

Keeping Trays Clean & Clear

Trays spend most of the day pressed against your teeth, so bacteria, sugars, and stains build up fast. A quick daily rinse keeps them fresh, invisible, and smell-free.

Rinse Every Removal

Pop them out, rinse under cool water, and give them a quick swish before popping them back in. Hot water warps the plastic — always cool.

Brush Gently, Twice a Day

Use a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap or a mild dish soap. Skip whitening toothpaste — it's abrasive and clouds the plastic over time.

Soak Once a Day

A 15-minute soak in a cleaning solution (Invisalign Cleaning Crystals, Retainer Brite, or a 1:1 water + white vinegar mix) lifts plaque and keeps trays crystal-clear.

Eating, Drinking & Trays

Your aligners are tougher than they look, but they aren't invincible. A few simple rules keep them clear, odor-free, and intact.

Do

  • Drink plain water with trays in — any temperature is fine.
  • Take them out for coffee, tea, soda, juice, wine, and anything that's not water.
  • Brush before reinserting after meals, or at least rinse your mouth thoroughly.
  • Carry a travel kit: case, floss, toothbrush, small toothpaste.

Don't

  • Eat with trays in. Crunching can crack the plastic and traps food against enamel.
  • Drink hot beverages with trays — heat warps them out of shape.
  • Chew gum. It sticks to the plastic and is nearly impossible to remove.
  • Use toothpaste with whiteners or harsh abrasives to clean them.

Don't Let the Napkin Win

The #1 way aligners get lost? Wrapped in a napkin and tossed with the rest of the tray at a restaurant. A few small habits will save you a replacement fee and days of lost progress.

Always Use Your Case

Never wrap trays in a napkin, a tissue, or a receipt — they look like trash, and they end up as trash. Put them in the case, every time, no exceptions.

Pro move: keep a second case in your bag, desk, or car. Carrying only one is how people get caught off guard.

Keep the Previous Tray

When you switch to a new set, hang onto the previous tray until your next office visit. If a current set breaks or goes missing, the old one keeps your teeth in place while we sort out a replacement.

Trays & Pets Don't Mix

Dogs (and occasionally cats) love the smell of aligners. Never leave them on a couch, coffee table, or nightstand — always in the case, out of reach.

Traveling? Bring Extras

Pack your current tray, the previous tray, and the next one in your series. If you're flying, put them in your carry-on — not checked luggage.

Lost a tray? Don't panic. Put the previous set back in right away to hold your position and call our office — we'll help you decide whether to move on to the next tray or order a replacement.
